The front door opens. Julia steps inside. Afternoon light spills across the hallway, catching dust in the air. She slips off her shoes, hesitates — the sound of a pan from the kitchen, gentle and ordinary.
Julia walks down the hall. She passes the living room — sunlight on the sofa, a half-read book facedown on the table. In the kitchen, NATHALIE stands at the stove, stirring something, humming under her breath. The window’s open, a breeze pushing the curtains.
Julia stops in the doorway, watching her. For a moment, she doesn’t speak.
Are you going to stand there judging me or are you going to help?
I'm thinking about it.
She walks up and hugs Nathalie — too tightly. Nathalie rolls her eyes but keeps cooking.
Stop it! I'm trying to cook.
Trying being the operative word.
Shut up.
Okay, what are we doing?
Nathalie hands her a spoon.
Try it.
Julia does. Makes a face.
Needs salt.
Needs you to leave.
Their voices overlap, fading into the sound of the simmering pan, the open window, the world outside. Music begins to rise — Judah Earl’s “Wehre Direh,” soft at first, then lifting as we move through time. The light shifts on the kitchen wall as we slowly drift back — the sisters still talking, still alive. Right here, right now, life goes on.
