INT. STUDENT DORM - DAY #1#

A scattering of white sugar against the varnish of the table. No faces yet, just hands. JULIA's hand upends the sugar shaker. White granules scatter in a jagged line across the wood. Another hand, HANNAH's, drags a fingertip through it, trying to give it shape.

HANNAH (O.S.)

Look... you start here, right? One line. That's me and Josh. Next line is here.

She pours an additional line.

JULIA (O.S.)

That's me and Josh.

HANNAH (O.S.)

Right, but then things changed again.

She pours a third line.

HANNAH (O.S.)

But then I went back into the past and got together with Josh again.

She's about to pour a fourth line.

JULIA (O.S.)

Wait. Doesn't that mean we're back here?

Her hand brushes some sugar to the top.

HANNAH (O.S.)

Could be. Could be a whole new timeline.

We reveal both their faces, looking amused and exhausted. They're in the same student dormroom Hannah was in last episode.

HANNAH

Goddammit, they were right. We need the sugar.

JULIA

So what's the plan?

HANNAH

Anything we change, Will can change again. Except if he gets lost in time.

JULIA

But Graham told us he's probably too skilled.

HANNAH

Not if we do this.

She takes her hand and rubs the sugar all over the table.

JULIA

Make a mess?

HANNAH

We need to change Will's life so he no longer knows what to jump to.

JULIA

(understanding)

Maya.

HANNAH

This time, we do it right. We make sure Will and Maya never meet.

JULIA

And how do we do that?

Hannah grabs from her desk an old laptop and turns her monitor so Julia can see it.

HANNAH

Will got sloppy. He told me Maya died exactly a year after we visited them in the bar. So I went online, found the obituaries in the city for that period, searched for her name. Maya Lucas. And guess what.

She opens the browser.

HANNAH

Found her online. They got tagged at a party two weeks ago from now, their first mention together. From these pictures... what do you think? Strangers? It's as good a shot as any.

JULIA

Damn. You're scary.

HANNAH

I have trust issues.

JULIA

Yeah.

(look around)

So this is where you lived when you were a student, huh? It's... cozy.

HANNAH

The further in time we are from Will, the harder it is for him to find us. Also, I think you and I are technically homeless.

JULIA

I wasn't complaining. It's cute. Nice to see this side of you.

HANNAH

So are we doing this?

JULIA

What about Will? The closer we get to his life, the more likely he is to find us again.

HANNAH

We have to keep them separated the moment we arrive. Someone should stand guard.

JULIA

(standing up, looking around)

Say no more.

(she finds a photo of Hannah and Naomi)

Hello. What's this?

HANNAH

An old mistake.

JULIA

You guys look cute.

HANNAH

Don't even.

JULIA

You sure you don't want to give her a call when all of this is over?

HANNAH

No thank you. That's in the past.

Julia drifts, notices the paper on the table: a rough sketch, colours bleeding at the edges.

JULIA

And this?

HANNAH

Just a sketch.

JULIA

I didn't know you used to paint.

HANNAH

Don't worry, I quit.

JULIA

Shame. Could've been a future in it.

HANNAH

Well.

(a beat, wryly)

Who knows?
